US Worries Mount Over Ukraine’s Assault on Kursk as Russia Plans Counterattack

Additional Coverage:

Ukrainian troops have not yet established defensive positions as they advance further into Russia’s Kursk region, a U.S. official revealed to ABC News. This absence of fortifications could indicate Ukrainian optimism about continuing their offensive push, but it also raises alarms among U.S. observers about potential vulnerabilities to Russian counterstrikes.

Initially, Russian forces did not heavily respond, according to the U.S. official. Major General Pat Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson, noted on Tuesday that only a limited number of Russian troops were observed moving toward Kursk.

However, the situation has evolved, with a substantial deployment of Russian reinforcements now mobilizing from both within Ukraine and Russia. These reinforcements are expected to arrive shortly, with the majority anticipated within the next two weeks.

Mark Cancian, a former Marine colonel and senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, commented on the risks of Ukraine’s strategy. He suggested that rather than pursuing minor territorial gains, Ukrainian forces should establish a solid defensive line within the captured area. He emphasized that this approach aligns with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s objective to form a buffer zone inside Russia, despite the higher casualties typically associated with offensive operations.

The pressure of the offensive in Kursk has forced Russia to reconsider its resource allocation, enhancing the Ukrainian military’s standing with domestic and international supporters and potentially securing leverage for future negotiations. Despite the swift progress and initial strategic surprise, Kyiv’s long-term intentions regarding the incursion remain under scrutiny.

Experts like Cancian are observing Ukraine’s next moves, particularly whether they will bolster their defenses or continue with small-scale advancements. As the situation progresses, the strategic value and outcomes of Ukraine’s actions in the Kursk region will become clearer amidst the ongoing conflict.
