The Strange Case of Alex Pennig

In December 2022, Alex Pennig was shot dead in her St. Paul apartment. Surveillance footage revealed a series of events leading up to her death.

The Night of the Incident

On December 15, Matthew Ecker, Pennig’s former co-worker, visited her after receiving a call from her about a fight with her boyfriend. Around 2 a.m. on December 16, Ecker and Pennig returned to her apartment. Pennig was seen waiting in the vestibule while Ecker went to his car.

The Shooting

At 2:50 a.m., Ecker called 911, reporting that Pennig had shot herself. Police arrived and found Pennig deceased in the bathroom with a gunshot wound to her head.

Ecker’s Story

Ecker initially claimed that Pennig had grabbed his gun and shot herself, but this was contradicted by evidence. The bathroom sink was dry, suggesting Ecker had not washed his hands after attempting to help Pennig. Additionally, there was no gunshot residue on him.

Key Evidence

Forensic investigators discovered a metal piece of the bathroom door lock on the floor where Pennig’s head was. This suggested that the door had been forced open before she was shot.

Murder Charges

On December 19, Ecker was charged with second-degree murder. His trial began on February 8, 2024, and on February 16, he was found guilty. Ecker was sentenced to 30 years in prison on April 3, 2024.

Aftermath

The case has raised concerns about domestic violence and the importance of being aware of warning signs. Pennig’s family has expressed outrage over her death and is seeking justice. Ecker is currently appealing his conviction.
